Gear Up For Rangers Baseball

Are You Superstitious?

Well, after three games, the Texas Rangers are the only undefeated team in the American League. It is the first 3-0 start for the Rangers since 1996, the first season they won the AL West and stuck around for post-season play.

That team happened to wear red hats and uniforms, too.

Coincidence?

This Rangers team isn’t taking any chances. The club was only supposed to sport the Ranger Red on Opening Day and 15 other specified home games throughout the season. The players and manager decided not to tempt fate after the 9-1 beating they handed the Indians on Opening Day and have donned the red hats the last two games.

It got me thinking about what a big role superstition plays in baseball. It’s fun sit back and watch all your favorite players go through their routines:

  • Ian Kinsler has his little semi-twist (like he is starting his swing) while standing in the batters box waiting for the pitch.
  • Michael Young always tightens his batting gloves and pounds his fists on the velcro straps before he steps to the plate.
  • Chris Davis taps his bat on his cleats and wipes it off under his arm pit after he swings unsucessfully at a pitch.
  • C.J. Wilson walks to the back of the mound and, sometimes, reties his shoe after giving up a hit.

What are your favorite ballplayers’ superstitions?

Will the Rangers keep wearing red until they lose?

I have to admit, I have always been partial to the blue hats. Growing up, my heroes were Nolan Ryan, Steve Buechele, Pete O’Brien and Ruben Sierra. The Rangers didn’t turn red until I got to high school, so I guess I will always bleed Ranger Blue. However, if wearing red gives this team a confidence and attitude that helps them win I’m all for it!

It’s on to Detroit where Kris Benson will face former Rangers prospect, Armando Galarraga at the Tigers’ home opener.

Let’s see if the Ranger Reds make the trip…

I believe in the fact that rituals or superstitions help the mental game and if your mental game is on it helps the physical game.
